Notes for NICHOLAS GARLING: He is mentioned as NICOLAAS in his father's Will dated 1 April 1762. He was a surveyor (architect). He lived for many years in his home at 26 King St. Bloomsbury, London and after his retirement he moved to the Strand, Westminster. He died in Great Rusell St., Bloomsbury. It is documented that at the time of his death he was a pew-holder at the Lutheran Church in the Savoy. Though his place of burial has not been ascertained, it was possibly in the Churchyard of the Lutheran |
Died at sea whilst whaling in Bay of Islands, New Zealand |
Born Paddington, Sydney NSW |
Born between 1705 & 1715 |
Notes for NICOLAUS GARLING: He calls himself Nicolaus in his Will dated 1 April 1762. Nicolaus was a habit-maker said to be son of another Nicolaus. Some unsupported speculations hint at that they may have come from the village of GARLIN in Bas-Pyrenees, Southern France. He obtained British Letters of Denization in London on 12 March 1757, where his was described as 'alien-born' and registered by the name of Nicholas. At that time he was residing at the parish of St. Martin-in-the Fields. Personal notes of J.C. Garling acomed@entelchile.net : Nicolaus Jr., though described as 'alien-born' and considered legally an alien, may not have felt limitations because of it, since it is noteworthy to remark that he applied for denization only more than 20 years after his first marriage in England to become formally a British subject. It must be considered that England was quite tolerant as to therights of aliens. Actually, an alien could obtain citizenship for hischildren by marrying an English women and having 2 children born in the country. Denization conceded most rights of citizenship excluding some, such as holding office. Full rights would have required Naturalization by Act of Parliament and taking the sacraments according to the rites of the Church of England. It is interesting to remark that there are indications that the familymay have been of German origin, regardless of having supposedly come from France with the first Nicolaus, as hinted by some researchers. One is the fact that in his Will 1762 he still refers to himself using the German spelling Nicolaus, instead of the French spelling Nicolas orthe English spelling Nicholas, as he was already mentioned 1757 in his Letter of Denization. Another is the fact that in his same Will of 1762 he refers to his son as Nicolaas, which is typical of a man who has not yet become used to the English spelling Nicholas but neither uses the French spelling Nicolas. By writing 'Nicolaas' he seems to have dropped the German 'u' in 'Nicolaus' but he still writes his son's name 'Nicholas' such as a German would write it phonetically. Still another indication is that in his Will he expresses his desire to be buriedin the Lutheran Church, of German Protestant faith. He does thereforeneither belong to the Church of England nor does he profess the Hugenot (French Calvinist) faith and question is why did he prefer a Germanchurch for his burial. |
