Notes for CHRISTIAN GARLING: There is no proof whatsoever that he may be a son of Nicolaus GARLING Sr. No birth record is available but there is evidence of two marriages inLondon. He is however included as a son based on following speculation, which is open to debate and further investigation : 1. He is at a same genealogical level with Nicolaus Jr. who died 1762. Since Nicolaus Jr.'s first son Nicholas was born 1741, his birth may be about 1710. Since Christian married for the first time in 1754, he may have been born about 1720, as a younger brother of Nicolaus, if we allow time tolerances. 2. He is mentioned as witness in the Will of Nicolaus Jr. dated 1 April 1762, which permits to suppose a family relation. As there is no evidence beyond that, he may have been a cousin or step-brother of Nicolaus Jr. or a child adopted by Nicolaus Sr. that was given the name GARLING. It is also noteworthy to remark that Christian married 1754 a Catherine WADEMEYER, which is distinctively a German name, possibly the daughter of a German inmigrant. This may add to the notion that the early GARLING may have entertained social relations with groups of German inmigrants on account of their possible origin. |

This is a copy of a microfilm in the Mitchell Library, Sydney. It begins with a letter from Nicholas Garling to Earl Bathurst, Secretary of State for Colonies, asking for " permission for his Grand-daughter Elizabeth Garling to proceed on board the merchant ship "Claudine" (Capt. Welsh) to reside with her friends at that place, she having been left in England for her education. I beg leave to notice that she is the daughter of Mr. Fredk. Garling who 5 years ago was sent to Sydney by Order of Government as Attorner on board the "Francis and Eliza", convict ship, at which place I hope his conduct has given entire satisfaction to Governor Macquarie and that he is likely to continue in that station. I request Permission likewise for a female servant, Elizabeth Hammersley to proceed with her to that place." On Sept. 16, 1819, Earl Bathurst granted permission for Elizabeth Garling to proceed from England to New South Wales as a Settler. George Allen's Diary has an entry dated 28, February, 1820..."Upon arrival at the LUmber yard Mr. Garling was informed by the Lieut. Govr. Colonel Erskine that his daughter Miss Garling had arrived from England the day before." "...The ship "Claudine" - Capt. Welsh - arrived yesterday from England with Merchandise, she called at the Derwent on her way, passengers Mrs. Roe and Miss Garling." Note: When Frederick Garling learnt of his daughter's arrival he was returning home from a business trip to Parramatta, in company with his young articled clerk, George Allen. During their absence they had also taken the opportunity to visit Frederick Garling's farm at Prospect Hill (now Blacktown), and to inspect, for the first time, young Allen's own recent grant of 300 acres, which was on the eastern side of Garling's 1200 acres and separated from it by what is now Sunny Holt Road (both properties were intersected by Breakfast Creek). The Lumber Yard where the Lieut.Govnr, Col Erskine, informed Frederick Garling of his daughter's arrival, was the site of the Government Stores and Workshops, near the Tank Stream Bridge, Sydney. The note then goes on to describe George Allen and his connections. |
